Special Olympics Head Coach, Jason Peterson, spoke at the March School Board meeting as a highlight of the month from the district. During his presentation Mr. Peterson shared photos from a season full of success as he talked about the program mission and philosophy. He stated that Smithville ISD is one of just a few schools in the state that funds a Special Olympics program for its students.
Mr. Peterson gave much of the credit for the student's, and the program, success to high school student volunteer coaches. The high school volunteer coaches attend all practices and travels with the team to competitions. A true testament to the program is that Mr. Peterson has not ever had to recruit volunteer coaches.
We are proud of our Smithville ISD Special Olympians and appreciate the commitment of the coaches and volunteer coaches and all they do for our students.
