On December 8, 2018 the Smithville High School DECA chapter hosted a clothing drive in the Brookshire Brothers parking lot for the Paralyzed Veterans of Texas. The event began around 9:00 a.m. as students traveled around town collecting donations from residents who left donations for them to collect. The collection of clothing took roughly 3 hours to complete. Students felt that the clothing drive went exceptionally well as they collected approximately 1000 pounds of clothing surpassing their original goal of 750 pounds.
The donations were collected for the Paralyzed Veterans of America - Texas chapter. The DECA chapter chose to help this organization because all proceeds go directly to the paralyzed veterans and their families. Also the Texas PVA is an organization dedicated to helping paralyzed veterans getting back to living normal lives along with researching various spinal cord injuries with the goal of helping veterans who also suffer from diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
The clothing drive will be used as a part of the project students are writing and will use in competition with the aspiration of advancing to internationals at Orlando, Florida.
